What is Realtime Court Reporting?
Realtime allows you to see testimony on your laptop computer as it is spoken. As this rough draft appears on your computer, you can make notes and annotations in preparation for follow-up examination or for transcript summary. Longhand note taking becomes a thing of the past, as a simple tap on the spacebar allows you to highlight portions of the realtime text for later reference. Realtime court reporting is the ability of the court reporter to use a computer-assisted stenograph machine which allows the testimony of the witness to appear on a computer monitor in plain English text within a matter of seconds from the time the words are spoken. This is accomplished by the matching of the reporter's stenographic keystrokes with the same stroking already stored in the reporter's computer dictionary and associated with a specific English word. If a "match" occurs, the English word appears on the computer monitor. If a match does not occur, an "untranslate" appears on the screen in the form of either a phonetic spelling of the word or the reporter's stenographic keystrokes which, of course, are unreadable to the untrained eye but which can later be corrected by the court reporter. Ordinarily "untranslates" will occur when new words are presented to the court reporter which are not already in her computer dictionary. This English text is then sent to the attorney's computer where it is "captured" by the attorney's realtime software. CaseView is the software program that allows the attorney to "capture" the court reporter's English text. Realtime translation can permit hearing-impaired litigants and jurors to take part in the proceedings in a new and more meaningful way. By providing the hearing-impaired individual with a computer monitor, the realtime presentation permits enhanced participation in all aspects of the proceedings.
