Its Importance In The Courtroom
The evidence presentation system provides the opportunity to counsel to make presentations to the Court and jury through hardware and software located in the courtroom. The same monitors used to display a document, a diagram, or a photograph and can also be used to display a videotaped deposition or to show a computer animation.
Counsel are free from the difficulties of arranging for equipment to be installed in the courtroom and the integration of various input devices.
Displaying a document to the jury as it is being explained speeds up the trial and enhances the jury's comprehension of the testimony. The jury's attention can be focused on the examining attorney's presentation rather than some other document that may be in a trial notebook.
Security problems are alleviated in cases of drugs and weapons. They can be displayed through the Elmo instead of being passed to the jury for viewing.
Any computer can be added into the evidence presentation system. This enables counsel to use the software they are most comfortable with in front of a jury. They simply plug their notebook computer into the system and are ready to go.
Full-featured XGA presenter
The Elmo (or Other Brand Name unit) is a visual presenter that allows hard copy paper, photographs, slide films, transparencies (negative and positive), and conventional video camera viewing all from one apparatus. It is similar to an overhead projector but uses a video camera and has an eight-time zoom lens built in. It will display hard copy paper sizes of half a name card to B4 sheets. Slides from 35mm to A4, both positive and negative, can be viewed without a special adapter. Output from the Elmo is distributed throughout the courtroom via distribution boxes to the monitors.
The Elmo allows documents to be displayed without the necessity of prior scanning. It works very well with three-dimensional objects. The Elmo visual presenter is a remarkably flexible device that permits the examining attorney, all other attorneys, the parties, the judge, the witness, and the jury to view an item of evidence at the same time. From a pedagogical standpoint this is a great benefit for the fact finder because it allows the judge and/or jury to view and follow along as the lawyer examines the witness with respect to the particular exhibit rather than having to wait until the testimony is completed before inspection by the finder of fact.
